In the sermon on the mount we are given an opportunity to consider what sort of community Jesus is calling his disciples to form, especially in the light of a world which is upside-down, fuelled by anxiety, dominated by self. It is not a book of instructions or a to-do list for Christians, it is a manifesto, a guiding document, to help us see that the reign of Christ, in the kingdom of heaven is an alternative to all that the world would tempt us to be. In this series we will explore together the description of the life of a people gathered by and around Jesus. |

Sermon on the Mount | Overview
|
In the sermon on the mount we get an insight into God’s rescue plan for the world that is taking place through Jesus. Jesus is making it clear He has come to confront evil and restore God’s rule and reign and amazingly chooses to do this through the creation of a new family: the Church. This collection of His teachings found in the sermon on the mount is all about teaching us about what it looks like to live in God’s Kingdom.
As always the Bible Project have some excellent videos and blogs that give an overview of the book of Matthew and within these videos they highlight the purpose and structure of the Sermon on the Mount. Please do check them out as we go through this series. "It's a really good idea for every church community to camp out in these words of Jesus and to work through them. It's both a privilege and one of the most disturbing things you can do as a human being!" - Tim Mackie |

Sermon on the Mount | Additional Resources
"This is a great little book. It splits the sermon on the mount into sections and then each section into a number of reflections. Each reflection would work well as a thought for the day as we work through this series together. It is very readable and also comes with helpful picture illustrations. I would really recommend it either as part of your own personal devotions or as a conversation starter at your small group." Emma Leggett From the back cover: If Jesus was serious..... then why don't we take Him more seriously? Compare Jesus' teaching to a quick survey of how Christians live, and one thing becomes apparent: we often ignore much of what He says. Skye Jethani exposes this problem through a deep examination of Christ's longest lesson of ethical teaching: the sermon on the Mount. |
